Back in the days of VCR’s setting a tape every night was a pain and of course a late night on a school night was not always worth it and so, as a result I decided to watch the show from the very start over a good period of time. With the eighth season it is interesting to see it gradually head a certain direction and to see it develop from the slight turn it had taken in the seventh.

Where once the show had a real acerbic edge and had pushed the envelope in terms of some of the subjects it had come up with, this season goes further from that again, only by a few steps but further for sure. The social observational aspect is still the core of the show but it s much more cheerful and less routed in bitterness. There are still some classic episodes in here though along with plenty of clips that would make a “best of” reel and, like I said, it is still very funny for the most part.

As I have always loved Kramer as a character, it isn’t a massive problem for me that the plots now mostly resemble the exaggerated nonsense that he has always gotten into, but I did still miss the sharp edge that the material used to have.

Famous ’90s women we still have crushes on

Elaine’s debut[ edit ] Unlike her three close friends, Elaine is absent from the pilot episode. Previously the female role was supposed to be Claire, the waitress at Pete’s Luncheonette played by Lee Garlington , but Monk’s Cafe replaced the luncheonette and Garlington was dropped from the role. In addition to the first episode, Elaine doesn’t appear in ” The Trip ” and therefore appears in fewer episodes than George and Jerry.

Real-life inspiration[ edit ] After it was discovered that Jerry Seinfeld once dated writer and comedian Carol Leifer , speculation grew that Elaine was based on Leifer, though that was later largely denied.

Dick Shawn was born Richard Schulefand in Buffalo, New York and raised in adjacent Lackawanna. The best remembered roles of his career are the hot-headed Sylvester Marcus, son of Mrs. Marcus (Ethel Merman), in Stanley Kramer’s It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World () and easygoing Lorenzo St. DuBois/Adolf Hitler in the musical Springtime for Hitler, the play within Mel Brooks’s movie The.

Star Trek — The Enterprise Turns into a Giant Baby CBS Television Distribution Continue Reading Below Advertisement Star Trek is one of the most beloved shows of all time, and between people having Star Trek weddings, getting Star Trek tattoos, and remodeling their small, crappy apartments to look like 24th century small, crappy apartments , it’s easy to forget just how many episodes of the show were absolute shit. But even on a show that featured space hippies, Spock’s brain getting stolen, and Captain Kirk being brainwashed into a Native American cliche, no episode can hold a tricorder to the awfulness of one proposed episode.

The script, which was bought by Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry but never put into production, began with the Enterprise hitting some weird space debris that causes the ship to be possessed by the soul of a newly born baby apparently those are just floating around out there in space, which should put an interesting spin on the abortion debate.

But while the episode could have confronted controversial issues like “Does life begin at conception, or after taking control of a Galaxy-class starship? It soon starts cooing and crying, prompting Uhura to pacify it, because even though Star Trek is set in the future, it was still made in the “Women Are Only Good for Babies and Boobs” s. Seeing as there’s no giant intergalactic breast for the Enterprise to space-suckle, Uhura sings “Rock-a-Bye-Baby” to the Enterprise in what would have been a strong contender for the stupidest moment in Star Trek history.

The baby ages rapidly, at first amusing itself by playing with the ship’s doors and elevators before almost killing everyone by flying toward an enticingly “pretty” sun. The baby-ship then starts talking, referring to Kirk as his father and asking as many annoying questions as real 5-year-olds.

You’d be surprised by how close some great TV shows came to destroying themselves with awful storylines.

There have been more than a few studies and lists that have tried to figure out who are the richest people of all time. This task has been proven to be nearly impossible. Accurately adjusting for inflation is just one obstacle. It is very hard to account for what made up wealth throughout history in terms of valuing goods and the like, and what was used as currency has also varied throughout time, with valuing that presenting its own difficulties.

Additionally, records and accounting have been lost. All we have to go on to determine who the wealthiest people are from hundreds of years ago are stories, legends, and other such written accounts.

The A-list: the top 25 shows of the past 25 years

The Andy Kaufman biopic Man on the Moon featured numerous people from Kaufman’s life as themselves, including the cast of Taxi — except for Danny DeVito, who was already playing Kaufman’s manager David Letterman , Paul Shaffer, and the Late Night with David Letterman band, re-creating Kaufman’s infamous appearance on Late Night With David Letterman with wrestler Jerry Lawler also playing himself — though filmed on the Late Show set, with no real attempt made to make anyone look younger.

Part 1[ edit ] Jerry and George get the green light to produce Jerry, the pilot for the series based on their ” nothing ” lives. George is obsessed with a potentially cancerous white spot on his lip and a box of raisins taken by an actor playing Kramer , played by Larry Hankin who had actually auditioned for the role of Kramer when Seinfeld began production. The real Kramer has intestinal problems and, on his way to find a bathroom, he gets delayed by being mugged and “misses his chance” to resolve the problem, resulting in constipation.

Jerry has an audition with the new “Elaine” played by Elena Wohl , a method actress interested in being Elaine in every way, including insisting being called Elaine and even going as far as dating Jerry and breaking up with him in Part 2. Jerry points out to the real Elaine that Monk’s coffee shop appears to be only hiring buxom waitresses, so she tries to get hired; when the owner turns her down, she files a report with the Equal Employment Opportunity office.

Part 2[ edit ] Rehearsals for the pilot begin. NBC executive Russell Dalrymple’s obsession with Elaine begins to affect his work; she tries to let him down easy by saying she can’t be in a relationship with a high-powered man and would prefer to be with someone selfless, such as a member of Greenpeace. Kramer resolves his constipation by administering himself an enema. George mistakenly thinks that his white spot has been diagnosed as cancer and goes on a tirade at NBC, only to discover that he misunderstood the diagnosis.

At the taping of the pilot, “Crazy” Joe Davola leaps out of the audience and onto the set while yelling ” Sic semper tyrannis! The pilot airs and numerous characters from past episodes at that point in the run comment on it.

He is a recovering alcoholic and accidentally drinks vodka when Jerry misplaces a vodka-cranberry that Dick confuses with his cranberry juice. Keith Hernandez Appears in The Boyfriend Jerry gets jealous when Elaine starts dating his new friend Keith, who he admired as a baseball player and gets jealous of Elaine when he cancels his plans with Jerry to go out with her.

Elaine is really into Keith as he regales her with stories of game 6 heroics with the Mets, but when Elaine finds out that he smokes, she decides to call it off. While at dinner Elaine makes up an elaborate story that she once dated a romantic matador from Spain named Eduardo Corrochio, making his name up hesitantly on the spot. These were my reasons for thinking Stewart and Seinfeld were both gay: Back in the early ’90s when he was on MTV and later when he hosted his syndicated talk show , Stewart gave a few interviews in which he appeared reluctant to discuss his personal life, using the standard-issue “no time for dating” line when the question came up about a girlfriend. And who can forget the night Lara Flynn Boyle was a guest on his show and set about making him extremely uncomfortable with a string of suggestive come-ons, which, though I felt she was pushing way too hard, further solidified the feeling I had that he just was not into women.

But mostly I remember the night Stewart sat in for a vacationing Tom Snyder on his late-night CBS talk show, the same week Ellen came out on her sitcom, and Stewart acted rather unimpressed and like he didn’t approve, saying he “didn’t see why it was necessary” for a celebrity to divulge their personal life in this way. It wasn’t much later, of course, that Stewart would sign on to host The Daily Show, his career would blast off like a rocket, and then virtually out of nowhere he produces a wife and starts popping out kids.

As noted on here previously, when Seinfeld was an up-and-coming comic appearing on talk shows like Mike Douglas, Johnny Carson, David Letterman, etc. Then when his sitcom gets off the ground and the whispers about him begin to intensify aided by a USA Today article conducted in his New York apartment while a handsome, unidentified man is visiting , Seinfeld suddenly becomes embroiled in a “scandalous” love affair with a much younger woman, followed of course by a “scandalous” romance with the woman he would later marry and produce children with.

Like with Stewart, it just all seemed rather convenient and not at all convincing, at least at the time and I never really bought the story about Seinfeld and Carol Leifer, who was the inspiration for Elaine and later came out as a lesbian; it just felt like PR nonsense made up to promote the sitcom. Again, I no longer believe Stewart and Seinfeld are gay, not because it’s unfathomable but because I just stopped paying much attention to either quite a long while ago Seinfeld especially has fallen off my radar.

Just saying for the purposes of this thread that this is what made me think both were closeted back in the day.
